Behavioral responses of swarming chironomids Cladotanytarsus sp. (Chironomidae, Diptera) to acoustic stimulation

Abstract


The responses of small swarming midges Cladotanytarsus sp. (Chironomidae, Diptera) to acoustic stimulation were investigated in natural conditions. Behavioural phonotactic thresholds were established as a function of carrier frequency in the range 100–600 Hz. Sounds of 260–320 Hz caused the shift of the swarm to the source of stimulation (positive phonotaxis) while at 140–200 Hz the sign of phonotaxis was negative. Minimal thresholds (45 dB SPL on average) were recorded at 280–320 Hz. Frequency selectivity of chironomid behavioral responses can be explained by the ability to analyse the spectrum of sounds.
