The plants of Rhododendron brachycarpum D. Don ex G. Don fil. и Rhododendron fauriei Franch. were sampled on the territory of the Sakhalin Region, (Kunashir and Iturup Islands), Primorskyi Region and Japan (Hokkaido, Honshu and Kyushu). A study of the populations of R. brachycarpum and R. fauriei collected in nature and taken from the herbarium collections MW and MHA. Despite numerous works by various authors on the taxonomy of R. brachycarpum and R. fauriei, there is still uncertainty in determining the status of these species. The aim of this study is to select a taxonomic concept for R. brachycarpum and R. fauriei using morphological and molecular phylogenetic methods. Internal transcribed spacers ITS nrDNA and chloroplast genome markers trnL-trnF and psbA-trnH were selected as molecular markers for molecular phylogenetic analysis. Genetically analyzed samples of R. brachycarpum and R. fauriei were relatively homogeneous. Analysis of morphological characteristics also showed that there are no clear differences between the species R. brachycarpum and R. fauriei in morphological characteristics. For the first time, studies of leaf sections of these species were conducted using scanning electron microscopy, which showed that the abaxial side of the leaf in R. brachycarpum and R. fauriei is covered with epicuticular wax. The analyzed samples differed in the density of the coating on the lower side of the leaf and the color of the flowers in the populations, and the distribution of these forms, according to the results of molecular phylogenetic analysis, apparently not related to the geographical location. Thus, our studies allow us to consider R. brachycarpum and R. fauriei as one polymorphic species R. brachycarpum.
