Leaf Diversity in the Family Pinaceae

The diversity of leaves in nine (out of eleven extant) genera of Pinaceae have been studied, including not only the type forms for the species but also deviating ones available. Structural types of leaves have been described and systematized. Variations in leaf structure and possible mutual transforma- tions of various types have been considered. Regularities of such transformations have been shown as well as their differences from those in other gymnosperm families. Our study has identifies unique peculiarities of leaves in the group: the absence of green photosynthesizing scale-like leaves and the presence of suberized leaf bases and petioles. Based on the specificity of leaf structure, the special position of the studied family within extant conifers has been confirmed.
