«Okskaya flora» in the works of classics and modern development of the topic

The development of floristic research in the Oka basin, starting with the work of A.F. Flerov «Okskaya flora» (1906–1910) is discussed. The controversy on the problem of the origin of rich colonies of forest-steppe species in the south of Moscow region is briefl y considered. Leading botanists of the 20th century rejected A.F. Flerov’s assumptions about the young age of the flora of Oka valley and the possibility of penetration of southern species into Middle Oka in historical times. Until 1980, the importance of the antropogenic factor in the process of dispersal of southern species was practically not discussed. Most botanists developed the “relict” concept of D.I. Litvinov. Currently, the possibility of forming colonies of species outside the boundaries of their natural habitats has been confirmed by works on polemochore plants in the Bryansk, Kaluga, Smolensk and Tver regions. Development of the theme of «Okskaya flora» in the 21st century became possible thanks to extensive research, including monitoring, in the regions. As a result, information was collected on the distribution of 2800 species in the Oka basin, more than 1300 of which are indigenous. Of these, 600 species have point maps of locations for regions. The article examines the distribution features of 252 forest-steppe and steppe species in the Oka basin. 87 species can be classified as characteristic of the Oka Valley flora itself. The remaining 165 species characteristic of the forest-steppe zone are distributed along the southern edges of the Oka basin; 39 of them have been recorded singly on the Middle Oka, and 38 species are also singly known on the Upper Oka. All 165 species are found in the right bank part of the Oka basin along the valleys of small rivers and the gully-gully system. 37 species behave as progressors in the Oka dasin. The role of the Oka Valley as an important biogeographical boundary is shown. Further monitoring studies with precise dating of finds will make it possible to answer the question about the dynamics of the number of southern species in the Oka basin.
