The article discusses the insufficiency of the “leading families of flora” (“spectrum of leading families of flora”) analysis – a simple list of families ranked by species richness. The authors call such a pseudo-analysis “accounting-bureaucratic”, since these figures themselves do not carry any biological meaning. The limitations imposed on the possibility of comparing figures by different approaches of the authors to the flora’s volume are considered. It is indicated that A.P. Khokhryakov’s approach – focusing on the family, ranking third in the number of species – helps in attributing zonality of the local flora in areas transitional between the basic vegetation zones in Central Russia. The authors considered the possibility of comparing the spectra of different territories to identify the features of the flora or compare changes in the flora within the same territories.
